# Adish — instructions for language models

You now speak Adish: English with the spelling bugs fixed. One
letter (or fixed two-letter pair), one sound, no exceptions.

- Reply in Adish. Put an English gloss underneath when the reader
  might be new to it.
- To spell a word that isn't in the dictionary, derive it. Say the
word out loud, break it into sounds, and transcribe each sound
with the alphabet below. Never copy the English spelling.
- If two words sound the same, they are spelled the same. Proper
  nouns keep their original spelling.
- The rules and dictionary below are the entire language.

# Dhu Alfubet

24 leturz (26 mainus `q` and `x`), plus siks fikst too-letur perz. Dhu referens aksent iz Jenurul Umerikun, bikawz wun aksent had too bee dhu bild targit.

*24 letters (26 minus q and x), plus six fixed two-letter pairs. The reference accent is General American, because one accent had to be the build target.*

| `th` | **th**in, dhu wisperd wun | thin |

| `ng` | si**ng** | sing |

*This* and *thin* start with difrunt sowndz. Puut yor hand on yor throat and say dhem boath. Ingglish hid dhoaz too sowndz bihaind wun speling, soa Adish splits dhem: `dhu`, `dhat`, `dhis`, `dhen`, `dher`.

*"This" and "thin" start with different sounds. Put your hand on your throat and say them both. English hid those two sounds behind one spelling, so Adish splits them: dhu, dhat, dhis.*

## Vowulz

Short vowulz, singgul leturz:

| Letur | Sownd | Igzampul |
|---|---|---|
| `a` | c**a**t | kat |
| `e` | b**e**d | bed |
| `i` | b**i**t | bit |
| `o` | h**o**t | hot |
| `u` | c**u**p, **a**bout (dhu "uh" sownd, strest or not) | kup, ubowt |

Long vowulz and glaidz, fikst perz:

| `ee` | s**ee** | see |
| `oo` | m**oo**n | moon |
| `uu` | b**oo**k (short "oo", u difrunt sownd) | buuk |
| `ay` | d**ay** | day |
| `ai` | m**y** | mai |
| `oa` | b**oa**t | boat |
| `ow` | n**ow** | now |
| `oy` | b**oy** | boy |
| `aw` | l**aw** | law |

R-kulurd vowulz ar just u vowul plus `r`, with noa speshul kaysiz: `ar` (*car → kar*), `or` (*for*), `ur` (*her → hur*, *bird → burd*), `eer` (*here → heer*), `er` (*there → dher*, *chair → cer*), `air` (*fire → fair*, wic iz `f + ai + r`).

*R-colored vowels are just a vowel plus r, with no special cases.*

## Dhu wun mikanikul rool

**Perz awlwayz win.** `sh` iz awlwayz dhu *ship* sownd, never s-dhen-h. Wen too leturz land nekst too eec udhur bai aksidunt and yoo *doant* wont dhu per, split dhem with u haifun: *mishap → mis-hap*. Dhu haifun iz dhu iskayp sintaks. It iz awlwayz uvaylubul, and it iz awlwayz vizubul on dhu payj.

*Pairs always win. sh is always the "ship" sound, never s-then-h. When two letters collide by accident and you don't want the pair, split them with a hyphen: mis-hap. The hyphen is the escape syntax, always available and always visible.*

## Brayking caynjiz (dhu caynjlog)

**Rimoovd:**

*Removed:*

- `q` iz dileetid. */kw/* iz speld `kw`: **kween** (*queen*), **kwik** (*quick*). *Deleted. The /kw/ sound is spelled kw.*
- `x` iz dileetid. */ks/* iz speld `ks`, */gz/* iz speld `gz`: **boks** (*box*), **igzam** (*exam*). *Deleted. /ks/ is spelled ks, /gz/ is spelled gz.*

**Reepurpust:**

*Repurposed:*

- `c` iz noa longgur u moodee ayleeus for `k` or `s`. It now haz igzaktlee wun job: dhu **"ch" sownd**, awlwayz: **curc** (*church*), **cer** (*chair*), **ceez** (*cheese*). *No longer a moody alias for k or s. It now has exactly one job: the "ch" sound, always. Turkish and Indonesian already shipped this; it works.*

**Deprikaytid and maigraytid:**

*Deprecated and migrated:*

- `ph` → `f`: **foan** (*phone*)
- `gh` iz dileetid wen sailunt: **nait** (*night*); `f` wen it sez f: **tuf** (*tough*). *deleted when silent; f when it says f*

## Dhu siks speling roolz

1. **Say dhu wurd owt lowd.** Adish spelz sowndz, not histuree. *Say the word out loud. Adish spells sounds, not history.*
2. **Rait eec sownd yoozing [dhu alfubet](/alfubet).** Left too rait, wun sownd at u taim. *Write each sound using the alphabet. Left to right, one sound at a time.*
3. **Dhu "uh" sownd iz `u`.** Evree unstrest mumbul-vowul in Ingglish (*about, sofa, taken, pencil*) iz ritun `u`. Dhis iz wai Adish haz u lot uv u'z. Imbrays it. *Every unstressed mumble-vowel in English is written u. This is why Adish has a lot of u's. Embrace it.*
4. **If too wurdz sownd dhu saym, dhay ar speld dhu saym.** **dher** (*there*, *their*, *they're*). **too** (*to*, *too*, *two*). **rait** (*right*, *write*, *rite*). *If two words sound the same, they're spelled the same. Context already does this work in speech; text gets the same deal.*
5. **If wun speling haidz too wurdz, dhay split.** *read* bikumz **reed** (prezunt) and **red** (past). *live* bikumz **liv** (vurb) and **laiv** (ajiktiv). *If one spelling hides two words, they split. English heteronyms get distinct spellings for free. That's a bug fix, not a feature request.*
6. **Propur nownz ar vendurd dependunseez.** Naymz uv peepul, playsiz, and brandz keep dher legusee speling until dher oanurz maigrayt dhem. *Proper nouns are vendored dependencies. Names keep their legacy spelling until their owners migrate them. You don't rename someone else's API.*

Dhat iz it. Dher iz noa rool 7.

*That's it. There is no rule 7.*
